Meta data are the first information, which you site visitors see in Google. They are invisible on your website but the base of your SEO: if their missing or not optimized, you have almost no chance to rank best or pull visitors on your site. But if you care about this 3 basic rules, you can optimize your website meta data like a pro!
- Check before you set up a new page, which keywords suit best for your topic and choose between 1-3 keywords, which have the best chances for you to generate leads or interest. For that, use the suggestions of our SEO plugin and also the Google AdWords Keyword Planner. The most important keyword should then be used as the main (focus) keyword for your content.
- Then create the meta title for your content. Here, the focus keyword should be included in the exact spelling. The character limit of 55 characters (including spaces) should be used best. In average, the minimum number of characters is 48 for the meta title in Google’s top five. The earlier the keyword(s) appear in the title, the more relevant they will be identified. So try to reduce your company’s / project’s name on the minimum length and only insert it at the end of the meta title, separated by a „ – „, a „ | „ or any other character, which makes it clear that there’s a difference between the content and site name.
- The meta description should suit to the title. So write here something to underline / proof the title in maximum 155 characters (incl. spaces). I recommend you to use here a call to action – like in Google AdWords ads: e.g. „Discover….“, „Learn how to…“, „Buy and compare…“ etc. The meta description is also perfect for a little eye catcher. Here, you can insert 1-3 special characters, which pull more attention in the search engine results page (SERP): My favorite ones are: ✅ ☎ ◥ ✚ ➤ ➜ ✓
If you have a site with masses of contents you can’t optimize all metadata in one step. Then you should start to optimize all metadata from items which are linked in the main menu. For alle other contents you can leave the meta titles generated automatically through the combination of the content’s and the company’s names. If the meta description is empty, our SEO plugin can pull the excerpt from WordPress – this is the introduction.
Often offer and price information awake more interest in the metadata. But as we can’t take influence on the update frequency of Google and you don’t want to display wrong, outdated information, it’s only for constant prices possible. Instead, you should use structured data for such information.
