Relaunch

When should you really relaunch a website - and when is a redesign enough?

A relaunch should only be carried out when structural or strategic problems exist - not for purely design reasons. A relaunch makes sense when: the site structure no longer matches user intent or the business model; content is strategically misaligned or underperforming; technical limitations (usually CMS-related) prevent further development; target audiences, offers or positioning have fundamentally changed. A redesign is often sufficient when: primarily the visual appearance is outdated; existing content and rankings are performing stably; conversion issues can be optimised in a targeted way; no fundamental changes to structure or URLs are needed.

A common mistake is justifying a relaunch with a design update. This unnecessarily changes content, rankings and user journeys that are working well. In short: a redesign optimises the surface.

A relaunch changes the system - and should only happen when there's a clear strategic reason for it.
